March 7, '09 - Nicole & Adam

Nicole almost always had a smile on her face, and Adam was exceptionally quiet - even more than me - with a relaxed, gentle personality and a very expressive face. I worked with them before the ceremony, then actually attended the ceremony at Imperial Palace as a guest, and worked with them afterward for part of the reception, some formals, etc. This was my first trip to NYNY for photos, and ESPN Zone for the reception. Again, some great shots to be had, in particular around the bridge in the afternoon/early evening.

The wedding dress was particularly good; great train and elegant details.

I had Nicole do a quick posing session while still waiting in her suite, only one basic position, and then had her turn to keep her eyes on me as I worked around her. I think this was the best from the set.

Enter the groom:

The father of the bride helping the groom tie his tie...

The bride getting dressed...

The bride's mother helping with the shoes...

We waited inside the NYNY until the limo picked us up. Another opportunity to get the full dress in view.

Father of the groom:

Just before the ceremony, everyone is in place and the father of the bride is about to walk her down the aisle.

After the wedding, everyone relaxes more, especially after the bride's father brings a round of beers from the bar across the lot.

We had to wait a while for the limo, but there were benches on the side to get a few more shots at.

Back in the limo, on the way to NYNY again for the reception at ESPN Zone...

The bride and groom came with me to a spot at NWNW for a few quick shots before the reception...

Good assortment of food!

Very happy people and good friends, that's one of the great things about weddings...

March 6, '09 - Amy & Steve

This was another post-wedding and reception only shoot, and my first time working around Treasure Island. There are a number of good spots, many of them near the dock. When I arrived and waited for the bride and groom to come out, there were plenty of candids to capture, plus her friends wanted to get together for a few "formals." Reception at Kahunaville in TI, away from the bar where there were drinking/mixing competitions later in the evening. The couple was comfortable and willing to do anything I requested. Overall, they seemed to like formal shots the most, but for the reception they wanted it to be very candid and informal.

The bride's friends (fun people make great photos):

After formals I took the couple out to the dock area, making a few stops here and there, including just by the doors.

The Wynn was a pretty good backdrop, but a big challenge for me to light the couple (who was in the shade while the Wynn was in direct sun) without having a stand and light exactly where I wanted it to strike them. Still, I think the photos came out pretty good.

The bride's shoes had to be removed after a short while - many brides now bring a second pair of much more comfortable shoes for wearing after the ceremony.

At Kahunaville, I got some details and did general candid coverage. The couple wanted it to be very informal, but some guests insisted that they at least share a piece of the "cake."

Sons are always good subjects:

And yes, by all means look interested...

February 14, '09 - Ron & Myiesha

This was a small ceremony and post-ceremony shoot, and the bride & groom were great to work with. The bride ran late in arriving at the chapel, and the initial plans didn't work out as expected, so I only got a chance to take photos of the groom and other relatives before the ceremony. The chapel was able to accommodate the couple by giving them an opening as soon as they had one. Not long after the ceremony, our time at the chapel was cut off by unexpected circumstances, but I was happy with the ceremony shots we got, and one of them was my favorite for the session. After the ceremony and a few more photos at the Vegas sign, the groom insisted on tipping me a second time just because I was punctual and did what I said I would do; I thought that was extremely generous, and it was completely unexpected. I was pleased with what we got in the time we had, but because our freedom to shoot was cut short and the light was a bit of a limiting factor, I gave the bride and groom an open offer for a free session anywhere around Las Vegas during their next visit. I think a post-wedding session with them during the early evening in good light, with only the time and location constraints that we mutually decide upon, would yield some really great results.

Very strong sunset lighting was hitting us around the time I took the ring photos.

My favorite from the shoot. Even though the lighting in the chapel was rather unfavorable, I managed to bounce enough light off the brown walls and there was a backlight that gave their faces a nice edge.

All of the creative photos I had a chance to get post-ceremony were taken by the Las Vegas sign.

My First Baptism - January 25, 2009

I've worked with children a few times before, but this was my first baptism. I embarrassed myself a little this time: I got to the location there early as usual (a catholic church in this case), and talked to two separate people asking where it would be best to place my umbrellas and light stands in order to not interfere with proceedings. They both directed me to the outer edges of a central location, which was fine with me. Then I saw the priest looking through glass windows at those big black and white things on stands near the altar, and I already knew then...he didn't want them there. No huge surprise at that point. So, I moved my stands to the leftmost pews well out of the way, set all three of my sunpak flashes as high as my stands would go, and pointed them directly at the ceiling to give some additional fill to the room. Well, it worked, and the parents were very happy with the results.

No, she almost never took her fingers out of her mouth! Until...

Then right back in again!

And out one last time, just for me:

I used my 5D with 70-200 f/2.8L IS and 85 f/1.8 the most for this shoot. I would love to have an 85 f/1.2L!
